Chinese course to be offered at JWCC this fall - Quincy Journal

Elementary Chinese II will be offered in the spring semester to allow students to further develop Chinese language skills

The most widely spoken language in the world will be taught at John Wood Community College this fall, beginning Tuesday, August 14.

An introductory Mandarin Chinese course will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. during the fall semester on JWCC's Quincy campus. JWCC is the only college in the region offering this valuable course.

The course is designed for students with no background or knowledge in Mandarin Chinese. Students will develop the ability to listen, speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese with special emphasis on speaking skills. There are no prerequisites for the course.

"The benefits of learning Mandarin Chinese are significant, especially in the increasingly competitive business world," JWCC instructor Cindy Wu Williams said. "At this time, there is perhaps no other more important or complex relationship in the world than that between the United States and China. A second language can open up additional career options in a variety of industries."

By the end of the course, students are expected to have the elementary ability to converse, read and write on selected topics of daily life, know the differences between the two Chinese writing systems, recognize 200 simplified Chinese characters, master Chinese phonics and tones of the language and build knowledge of traditional and modern Chinese culture, including proper Chinese business etiquette.

Elementary Chinese II will be offered at JWCC in the spring semester to allow student to further develop Chinese language skills and knowledge of the culture.

Williams was born in Taiwan and holds a bachelor's degree in French language and literature from Tamkang University in Taiwan and a master's degree in liberal arts and mass communication from Oklahoma City University. She completed a Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCASL) at the National Taiwan Normal University. Williams has resided in northeast Missouri for more than 20 years and became the first Chinese language teacher in the area.

Individuals interested in enrolling in the Chinese course can contact the JWCC advising office at 217.641.4355 oradvising@jwcc.edu. For more information about aspects of the course, contact Williams at 217.641.4569 or swilliams@jwcc.edu.
