Teachers in Chinese schools urged to master Mandarin

MIRI: Chinese school teachers were told to improve and strengthen their mastery of Mandarin.

By doing so, they could gain respect and motivate their students to speak and understand the language better.

Communication Assistant Minis-ter Datuk Lee Kim Shin said practising accurate pronunciation, for example, was very important because it resulted in clear delivery of a message from one person to another.

“The Chinese are composed of people with different dialects. Therefore, there is a need to practice a standard language that represents and unite them all,” he said during a closing ceremony of a linguistic course here.

Lee also urged teachers to continuously update themselves through various ways including organising video conferences to interact frequently with their counterparts in mainland China.

The two-day course on Mandarin phonetic and grammar, which was conducted by a linguist from mainland China, Prof Zhou Ji Shen, was attended by 128 teachers from Chinese primary schools here.

Organised by Miri Division Chinese School Teachers Association, the course was sponsored by Lee, who promised to donate RM10,000 to support the annual programme.
