吃苹果的时候，你喜欢大的还是小的？为什么？课文中的哥哥和弟弟又是怎么做的呢？
王太太有两个儿子，小的五岁，大的七岁。一个星期天的上午，她正在洗衣服，小儿子走过来说：“妈妈，我想吃糖。”
王太太想了想说：“糖吃多了对牙不好，吃苹果吧，一个给哥哥。”说完，给他两个苹果。这两个苹果一个大，一个小。小儿子把小的给了哥哥，大的留给了自己。
哥哥看到弟弟的苹果大，就对弟弟说：“自己挑大的太自私了。要是妈妈给我这两个苹果，我一定把大的给你。”
“我就知道你会这么做，”弟弟回答说，“所以我拿了大的。”

要是
If
“要是” is a conjunctive word used to indicate “assumption”, similar in meaning to “如果”.
要是妈妈给我这两个苹果，我一定把大的给你。
If Mum gave me these two apples, I would definitely give you the bigger one.
Example:
(1) 要是我有很多钱，我想去上海玩儿一个月。
(2) 要是明天下雨，我们就不去长城。

“一定” is an adverb used to indicate “resolutely”,”must”..
要是妈妈给我这两个苹果，我一定把大的给你。
