New Year’s Words
Bring out the party favors, noise makers and prepare for the countdown on New Year's Eve.
2012 was quite a year and to celebrate the new one (since we all made it – take that Mayans!), I've put a list together of the top phrases you'll need to know for New Year's (元旦).
Besides knowing the basic, "Happy New Year's" (新年快乐), here's the top 8 phrases for your New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!
8. 午夜 (wǔ yè): midnight
"昨晚，不少吃完饭临时想到卡拉OK唱歌的人扑了空，因为所有歌厅午夜12点之前的场子都被提前预订一空"
"zuó wǎn, bù shǎo chī wán fàn línshí xiǎng dào kǎ lā OK chàng gē de rén pū le kōng, yīn wéi suǒ yǒu gē tīng wǔ yè 12 diǎn zhī qián de chǎng zi dōu bèi tí qián yù dìng yī kōng"
"Yesterday, most of the people that finished eating, suddenly wanted to go sing karaoke but couldn't because all of the KTV rooms need to be reserved before midnight."
7. 敬酒 (jìng jiǔ): toast
"起身敬酒10分钟后，他发现原本放在座位上的黑色手包不见了"
"qǐ shēn jìng jiǔ 10 fēn zhōng hòu, tā fā xiàn yuán běn fàng zài zuò wèi shàng de hēi sè shǒu bāo bù jiàn le"
"After 10 minutes of getting up and making toasts, he found out that the black wallet which was put on the seat disappeared"
6. 香槟酒 (xiāng bīn jiǔ): champagne
"香槟酒的味道醇美，适合任何时刻饮用，配任何食物都好，也适合用来干杯"
"xiāng bīn jiǔ de wèidào chún měi, shì hé rèn hé shí kè yǐn yòng, pèi rèn hé shí wù dōu hǎo, yě shì hé yòng lái gān bēi"

5. 五彩纸屑 (wǔ cǎi zhǐ xiè): confetti

3. 倒计时(dào jì shí): countdown

"zuó tiān xià wǔ, yí hé yuán '2013 běi jīng xīn nián dào jì shí' huó dòng xiàn chǎng zhǔ huì tái yǐ jīng dā jiàn wán bì"
"Yesterday afternoon, Summer Palace's '2013 Beijing New Year Countdown' activity is is fully set"
2. 新年愿望 (xīn nián yuàn wàng): New Year's resolution
"wǒ yǒu gè xīn nián yuàn wàng, nǐ men kě yǐ bāng wǒ shí xiàn ma"
"I have a New Year's resolution, may you guys help me achieve this?"
1. 辞旧迎新 (cí jiù yíng xīn): out with the old and in with the new
"cí jiù yíng xīn yǒng yuǎn shì xīn nián bù biàn de zhǔ tí"
"Out with the old and in with the new is always an unchanging topic of the New Year"
